Some drugs are legal and some are illegal. Illegal drugs are given a class, A, B or C under The Misuse of Drugs Act.

Each class comes with different penalties and these change depending on whether you are in possession, are supplying or intending to supply.

Possession		Supply/Intending to Supply
Class A		Class A
Maximum 7 years in jail		Maximum is life in jail
Class B		Class B
Maximum 5 years in jail		Maximum 14 years in jail
Class C		Class C
Maximum 2 years in jail		Maximum 14 years in jail

You can also receive an unlimited fine for any of the above offences. The difference between possession, supply and intent to supply can be a bit confusing.

When you have an amount of drugs on your person or that can be proved belongs to you, that is judged to be of no bigger quantity than for your own personal use.

When you pass on drugs. You do not have to receive money. You might give them away or pass them on for a friend.

Intent to supply - when you have an amount of drugs on your person or that can be proved belongs to you, that is judged to be of a quantity that is more than just for your personal use, or it is believed you are intending to supply to others.

The difference between amounts for personal use and intent to supply can be down to a load of things and there is no written rule about the amounts.
