You may or may not be aware that February is designated Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender (LGBT) History Month and celebrates the lives and achievements of the LGBT community.
This year, to demonstrate our commitment to equality & diversity the Children & Young Peoples Theme has signed up to Stonewall’s National Campaign to tackle homophobic bullying in Britain’s schools and promoting equality in education. This is a significant step forward for us in tackling homophobic bullying which not only blights the colleges and schools where it takes place but has significant impact on the health, well-being and attainment of pupils affected.
Making all young people – regardless of their sexuality – feel included and valued is a major opportunity to transform the lives of a significant number of pupils and students. Signing up to Stonewall’s campaign will help us locally to strengthen our anti-bullying work and provide useful guidance to staff that will help them to prevent bullying and respond appropriately when it takes place.
A working group comprising Juliet Herbert – Equalities Officer, Kate McConlough – Anti-bullying Officer and Sarah New – Senior Joint Commissioning Manager will be taking this work forward, working closely with the shOUT Youth Forum.
