Sexual development can happen any time between the 10 and 18, most usually around 13 or 14 but don’t worry it makes no difference when you start ‘cos it doesn’t affect what you will be like as an adult.
Your sexual development is marked by a whole lot of body changes
Body changes:
- Your genitals (testicles & penis) get bigger!
- Your shoulders widen
- You get taller and more muscular and may be very, very hungry!
- Your voice deepens
- You grow hair in places there wasn’t any, like your genitals, under arms chest and face!
- Your nipples and breast area might become sensitive for a short time!
- Joints like knees might be painful
- Spots may grow on your face, neck, chest or back
It all sounds pretty awful but don’t worry its not all going to happen at the same time. Infact it can take several years for every thing to happen and might even carry on into your early twenties!

The penis has two main parts a HEAD and a SHAFT the head of the penis is usually much more sensitive than the shaft. A penis has two jobs peeing and sex.
Normally a man’s penis is soft and hangs down, but sometimes it goes stiff, grows longer and wider and sticks up and away from the body. This is known as an ERECTION It is caused by the penis filling with blood rather like a sponge!Erections can come and go without warning, sometimes in embarrassing situations.
They occur in males of all ages including babies and old men! Many young men worry about the size of their penis. That its smaller than everyone else’s.
Most 12 year olds before sexual development have a penis 3-5cm long when soft and usually less than 8cm when erect! Is a sleeve of skin that covers the head of the penis when it is soft. When a man has an erection it pulls back to expose the head of the penis.
You should be able to pull the foreskin back to expose the head of the penis to wash.
