Physical activity

Why is physical activity so important for children? What's the big deal?

Regular physical activity helps you:

  • Build and maintain healthy bones, muscles, and joints
  • Control weight, build lean muscle, and reduce fat
  • Prevent or delay the development of high blood pressure
  • Reduce feelings of depression and anxiety
  • May increase children's capacity for learning
  • Promote social well-being

The government is trying hard to encourage everyone to be more active in the U.K, especially children, as the number of obese children in the U.K is increasing very quickly because children are doing very little exercise.

It is recommended that children and young people should take part in a total of at least 60 minutes of moderate physical activity most days a week.  At least twice a week this should include activities to improve bone health, muscle strength and flexibility.

You can do this in one session or in shorter activity sessions of 10 minutes or more.  Activities could include - brisk walking, running around in the park, cycling, swimming, playing football, netball, basketball or any team games with your friends.

Any activity you take part in should make you a bit breathless!
